Tonight's Festivities

8.30--Lights go out; dog freaks out; Mum freaks out; sister bemoans the loss of entertainment for the evening; brother smirks knowingly and mutters a coy, "Zombies...". I try not to dread having to communicate with my family. Dad, calm and collected, goes into full crisis-management mode.
8.35--Thousands have candles have been lit; dog has been calmed; Mum has been calmed; sister has accidentally tried to turn the lights on 3 times; brother starts discussing the Zombie Apocalypse. I try to figure out what time would be a good time to excuse myself from the conversation. Dad, still calm, encourages the finishing of dinner dishes and the eating of cheese course.
8.35-10.00--Conversation not nearly as bad as dreaded, as it primarily regards the longevity of the blackout, the necessity to conserve battery on devices such as cell phones, tablets and laptops, all while listening to cheesy 80s ballad-pop through Pandora on an iPhone 5. Brother still anxious to discuss battle plans for the Zombie Apocalypse. Has dubbed his plan "Nut up or shut up."
10.30--All's quiet on the western front...until dog starts to freak out again (apparently flashlights are the DEVIL). Dad calms him down--in my room. Effectively kicks me out of my own room for 20 minutes.
10.50--Finally back in my room, ready to read by candlelight, and the lights come back on. Sigh of relief breathed; sanity restored (somewhat).

As we glare down the narrowing hallway of our inevitable doom, I would like to say a few words to you, the people of my social network. As you gaze wistfully at your Facebook walls, remember:

* Your sci-fi fandom is clearly superior to the fandom of your virtual nemesis.

* Losing friends because they are Team Jacob instead of Team Edward seems perfectly rational.

* You were right all along: you & Justin Bieber/whatever member of One Direction totally belong together.

* Obama really WAS a Muslim & born in Africa, & in the long run, isn’t that more important than a limping economy & backward social policies?

* Women’s suffrage was totally unnecessary. Also - aren’t you glad there aren’t going to be any more lady drivers?

* Plus side of non-existence - immigration is totally a moot point!

* Nothing was ever as important as the arguments over sexuality, politics & religion, because they totally matter in the wake of complete annihilation.

In all seriousness - hug your loved ones close because regardless of the ancient Mayans, every day is a gift & will always be better spent appreciating & respecting humanity, in all its mysterious forms.
